Who Are Abraham’s Children?
Over and over again, as we have seen, Jesus redefines parentage as having to do with behavior and heart attitude rather than with family ties. He does this most forcefully in John’s gospel where he acknowledges that his opponents are in some sense Abraham’s children, but then points out that they their malice does not align them with Abraham and instead reveal themselves to have the devil as their father (John 8:37-44). By the same type of reasoning, Paul says that the identity of a Jew depends on an inward spiritual condition but not by a fleshly qualification such as physical circumcision (Rom 2:28-29). In Galatians, Paul says that people of faith are the true sons of Abraham (Gal 3:7, 29). God had said that by means of Abraham and his seed, or offspring, all the nations would be blessed (Gen 12:3). Paul considers this to mean that people of the nations, through faith in Jesus, themselves become part of the Abraham’s “seed.”
