🏠 THE HEDGEHOG SLEEPING HOUSE
Anyone who has a hedgehog in their garden can offer them a sleeping house. Hedgehogs are often very picky when it comes to their sleeping place and naturally prefer sleeping places under thick hedges.
In autumn and winter, however, the sleeping house was very popular with me. A hedgehog sleeping house has many advantages, it serves the hedgehog as a shelter from predators (fox, badger, marten and eagle owl) and protects him from rain and cold. The hedgehog also uses it for its hibernation, which it keeps from the beginning of October to April every year, depending on the weather.
A good sleeping house consists of two rooms, the labyrinth entrance and the sleeping room, both with an entrance opening of at least 10 cm x 10 cm, so cats and raccoons can only enter more difficultly and the hedgehog can sleep safely and in peace. The labyrinth entrance also serves as a vestibule. The hedgehog should have at least 30 cm x 30 cm as a floor space in the bedroom.
If you want, you can help the hedgehog and fill the bedroom with a little dry leaves, moss or straw, but he is quite able to build his own nest. Please do not use hay or newspaper to fill the sleeping house, it molds very quickly and the hedgehog can get sick.
If you have rats in your garden, you can also attach a rat flap to the entrance of the sleeping house.
My self-built sleeping house has a wooden floor, but it can also be done without a floor, both have their advantages and disadvantages, if you have a floor, you should have holes in it so that urine can drain.
The house should be cleaned once a year, I clean it in the summer when the hedgehog prefers to spend the nights under a hedge.
The hedgehog house should be set up in a sheltered and shady place, ideally under or on a hedge, so that there is not too much sun on it during the day and the hedgehog gets too warm. So that the entrance of the sleeping house is protected from rain as much as possible, it should face south or east.
