All of my Medical School Grades! (STEP1/STEP2CK & Research)

There is a lot of ambiguity about the way grading works in medical school. I wanted to go ahead and try to provide my perspective of how grading was for me in medical school. I took STEP1 when it was still graded numerically, but now STEP2CK has taken over that role (since STEP1 is purely pass/fail).

Answer: Usually, the higher paying the specialty, the more competitive it is.

"If you want a career as an internist, here is how competitive the medical specialty is to match into an internal medicine residency. Internal medicine is the branch of medicine that involves physicians who provide long-term, comprehensive care in the office and the hospital, managing both common and complex illnesses in adolescents, adults, and the elderly."

Prior to STEP1 going P/F, what score did medical students usually aim for? (via: https://www.lecturio.com/blog/medical...)

The short answer is: it depends. The current minimum passing score for Step 1 is a 194. The score you might want to get, however, could be somewhere between 238 or as high as 251, depending on the competitiveness of your desired specialty. In 2020, four of the top-matched specialty tracks for U.S. MD graduates were internal medicine, family medicine, anesthesiology, and radiology-diagnostic. The Step 1 score range for those top-matched specialities was between 220 and 249, and the percentage of first-year residents matched in these ranges in.2020 was between 60 percent and 66 percent.
