Blackground Records Sues Aaliyah's Mom (2025) for "Contractual Fraud"

Blackground Records has filed a lawsuit against Diane Haughton (Aaliyah's mother / Sister of Blackground's CEO & Founder, Barry Hankerson) citing they were unaware they were beneficiaries of a "Release Agreement" which releases Virgin Records AND IT'S AFFILIATES "of every kind" (which includes Blackground) from any and all past, present and future CLAIM demands, fees, cost, legal suits, and more.
Because this was part of an additional "Confidential Agreement" with Virgin Records, Blackground was unaware of the specifics of this lawsuit. They assert that if they had known they were beneficiaries of the agreement—something they claim they only discovered in February 2024—they would not have complied with Diane's request for a Royalty Payment made on July 21, 2021, which coincided with discussions about releasing Aaliyah's music. Now, they are seeking a full refund of the payment, along with interest, court costs, and any other penalties deemed appropriate by the courts.
Diane is set to argue her side March 24, 2025 in a California Court.
