Worth Every Miss: Two Days of Struggle Before the Bull Red of a Lifetime Snapped My Rod

Some days everything goes wrong on the water. Missed hook sets, stolen bait, broken gear, bad timing, dropping water levels, getting stuck in the marsh, even losing the paddle again. But every now and then, a single bite makes the entire grind worth it.

This trip to Venice, Louisiana started slow. Live shrimp were almost impossible to get, the reds were shy, the gar wouldn’t stay hooked, and we covered mile after mile through grass cuts and ponds trying to find a pattern. We worked blue crab, live shrimp, popping corks, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, Carolina rigs — anything to get a fish to stick. Nothing came easy.

Then it happened — 26:10

A massive red picked up my bait, ripped drag instantly, pulled me down the canal, wrapped my gear, and broke my rod right at the boat. Chaos everywhere. And somehow it still came together. My personal best redfish, the fish of the trip, and one of the coolest catches of my life.

This is why we come to Venice. This is why we grind all week.
