My Danish friend Christian emailed me this summer to let me know that a recently restored steam locomotive, the Union Pacific Big Boy #4014 was going to be in Denver on its way home to Cheyenne, Wyoming. His email included info on some places it was going to be passing through on its way to Denver, so I decided an afternoon out chasing the largest steam locomotive ever built was something I needed to do. The Big Boy is what is known as a 4-8-8-4. Its articulated, meaning that the two sets of driver wheels (the 8's in the 4-8-8-4) are free to turn separately from each other, so that it can negotiate curves that would be too right for 16 non-articulated wheels. #4014 was one of 25 Big Boys built in the early 1940's, and it is over 130 feet long. On this beautiful day in Colorado, it was pulling a number of restored passenger cars from the UP Heritage Fleet.
Union Pacific's #4014 traveled through 10 States, covering 4,000 miles (6400 km) in 34 days.
