Frost Seeding Little Bluestem Prairie Restoration

Today I Frost Seeded one pound of Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) seed into three prairie patches on Planet Mojo! I started at Bigfoot Prairie and the edge of the south pasture all the way to the shade opening for the horses, then, after finding my lost camera, I frost seeded the Back Prairie and what I have been referring to as the "Poo Prairie" -- the triangular area that Natalie and I cleared this spring that is right below the septic mound. I wanted to 'scratch in' some of the seed, but we are a couple of days away from the first day of winter, and the ground is frozen solid as a rock.

I still have a lot of seed to harvest (Big Bluestem and Indian Grass), and I will be frost seeding that as well as the seed already harvested into the North Prairie in a couple of days. It will be very windy from the SW tomorrow and I don't want to seed in nasty weather if I can avoid it.😊

For those of you who have never heard of frost seeding before, it is a technique where seed is tossed on frozen ground, and the fissures caused by frost allow the seed to fall into them and will sprout easier in the spring. Much of the seed that doesn't fall into the cracks will sprout as well, but you have to do frost seeding when the ground is frozen, and before there is snow cover.
