James Alfred Bowley (1844-1891) was the great nephew of Harriet Tubman. He was in the first group of enslaved African Americans that Tubman helped to escape from Maryland in 1851. Bowley moved to Georgetown, SC after the Civil War. During the Reconstruction years he served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and on the Board of Trustees for the University of South Carolina. After the Reconstruction period ended, Mr. Bowley continued to serve his community as an educator in the city's African American public schools.
