Shall We Dance?, from the Lou and Susan Nunez Collection, with Michael Canadas. Courtesy of Susan and Lou Nunez, Michael guides us a delightful look at a collection of 19th Century French automaton “waltzers.” Michael winds up couples and individual waltzers made by both Gustave Vichy and Alexandre-Nicolas Théroude. We learn that when we state the maker of the automaton, we reference the maker of the mechanism, whereas heads were sourced from a variety of makers, both French and German. While earlier heads were made of Papier-mâché, by the 1860’s, bisque heads were preferred. The colorful, French court inspired costumes are examined for colors, trim and accessories.
