April 1983.
ITN News report by Jon Snow about US concern about communist influence on the Caribbean Island of Grenada which had developed close economic ties with Cuba.
Prime Minister Maurice Bishop (1944-1983) who is interviewed towards the end of the report was the leader of the Marxist-Leninist New Jewel Movement Party. He had seized power from Prime Minister Eric Gairy in 1979, while Gairy was in New York addressing the United Nations.
On October 16 1983, he was overthrown by a coup led by his deputy, Benard Coard. Bishop and his partner Jacqueline Creft, were executed three days later.
Coard was himself deposed by General Hudson Austin who formed a Military Council. The United States launched an invasion on October 25th 1983. Austin and Coard were among those arrested.
