Angelica Mesiti’nin Gelecek Zamanın Süregelen Hikâyesi başlıklı kişisel sergisi ismini, sakince başlayan ve ardından güçlü bir kreşendoyla fırtınaya dönüştükten sonra yavaşlayarak sönümlenen yağmurun sesinin on bir icracı tarafından el hareketleri ve beden perküsyonuyla canlandırıldığı videosundan alıyor. Sanatçının bir okul bahçesinde tanık olduğu ve genellikle yaratıcı drama çalışmalarında faydalanılan bir oyundan esinle ürettiği siyah beyaz videoda, bir grup genç ellerini ovuşturma, alkışlama, avuçlarını birbirine sürtme, uyluklarına vurma ve parmak şıklatma gibi jestlerle yağmurun çiseleme ve sağanak arasında değişen ritmini taklit ediyor. Etkisini giderek artıran kuşatıcı bir ses manzarası ve hipnotik bir görsel kompozisyon içerisinde performansçıların âdeta yağmurun kendisine dönüştükleri bu incelikli koreografi, kişileri birbirlerine ve çevrelerine bağlayan bir rezonans alanı yaratarak bireysel ve kolektif olan arasında köprü kuran ortak bir deneyimin taşıyıcısı hâline geliyor. Doğayı taklit etmeye dayanan bu basit oyun yoluyla yapıt, tek başına yapmanın imkânsız olduğu bir eylemin kolektif olarak yaratılma potansiyeline işaret ediyor. Angelica Mesiti’s solo exhibition Future Perfect Continuous borrows its title from the artist’s eponymous video in which eleven performers enact the sound of rain, as it varies over a wide spectrum. Starting softly as a gentle drizzle, the sound gradually intensifies, and, with a dramatic crescendo, transforms into a full-blown storm, before eventually receding and fading away, all conveyed through hand gestures and body percussion. The black-and-white video, inspired by a children’s game the artist happened to witness in a schoolyard, which is often utilised in creative drama workshops, features a group of young people who emulate the rhythmic sound of rainfall, as it alternates between a gentle sprinkle and a torrential downpour, through gestures like rubbing and clapping their hands, sliding their palms against each other, slapping their thighs, and snapping their fingers. This subtle choreography creates an immersive soundscape and a hypnotic visual composition with an evermore mesmerising effect that virtually transforms the performers into the rain itself. This transformation ultimately creates the medium for an all-encompassing, shared experience; bridging the gap between the individual and the collective by generating a resonant space that connects each participant both with one another, and their surroundings. Through a simple game based on the imitation of nature, the work hints at how an action that would be impossible to carry out alone can be achieved collectively. Future Perfect Continuous, whose title alludes to an English verb tense used to describe actions that will have been in progress up to a defined moment in the future, invites the audience to reflect on current global turmoil, and consider how we may envision the future through a collective lens.
