A New Covenant, a Redeemed Israel
Jeremiah prophesied that when God regathered Israel after the Babylonian exile, the nation would be established as permanently as the sun, moon, and stars, and that Jerusalem would never again be overthrown (Jer 31:35-40). The means for national restoration would be a “new covenant,” in which God’s law would be written on hearts (31:31-33). In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus makes clear that the pouring out of his blood is what inaugurates the “new covenant” promised in Jeremiah (Luke 22:20). This reconciliation with God, which can never be interrupted or overthrown by earthly powers and does not require a physical temple, was and is first for people of fleshly Israelite ancestry, but also for Gentiles who become part of a greater, spiritual nation (Heb 10:14-20; Matt 21:43). After the coming of Jesus, the earthly nation of Israel was overthrown after being revived in 66 CE and again in 132 CE, with its most recent version appearing in 1948. The promises of Jeremiah have proven not to apply to any of these revivals of the earthly nation.
