Tewkesbury brewery explore.
• The building popularly called the Old Brewery stands on Quay Street (close to the Borough Flour Mills / Abbey / Smiths Lane area) and is the red-brick industrial block with the stone name band and circular medallion on its gable.
Founding & early history (key dates)
• The Blizard brewery is associated with George and Walter Blizard, who formed a partnership with William Colman (of Norwich); records place the growth of their brewing/malting activity in the mid- to late-19th century (the partnership and brewery activity is described in local 19th-century records).
• The site later became part of the Tewkesbury Brewery Co. Ltd, which was registered (as a company to acquire existing local brewing interests such as Joseph Jupp’s Abbey Brewery and James W. Wilson’s “Original Brewery”). The company/plant was offered for sale in December 1892.
• In 1896 the Tewkesbury Brewery concern (including the Quay Street works) was acquired by Arnold, Perrett & Co. Ltd (a larger local brewery concern).
Later uses / 20th century
• Brewing declined/ceased and the brewery buildings were reused. By the early 20th century the old brewery buildings were being used for motor-related businesses (Tewkesbury Garage is recorded on nearby sites by 1911) and other commercial/warehouse uses.
Architecture & identifying features
• Construction: red brick with blue/contrasting dressings, typical late-Victorian industrial styling for a small brewery/maltings. There’s a horizontal stone band beneath the first-floor windows that once bore the brewery name (now faint), and the gable contains a circular stone medallion carved with a hand clutching a sheaf of corn / wheatsheaf (a brewer’s/malt symbol).
• The brickwork and arched window shapes are visible in historic and modern photos — the façade still conveys its original industrial character even though windows are largely boarded.
