In this video I first show the full string section I recorded. After that I'll build the string orchestra part I recorded layer by layer so you can get a good idea of all that is going on there. Finally I play the string section as it is used in the rock track it was recorded for. The rock track is still in production, but I'll post a link here as soon as it is done!
The Chin Cello or Octave Viola is a viola modified to be able to handle so called octave strings (I use Super-Sensitive Sensicore Octave Viola Strings, but you can also use 1/8th or 1/16 cello strings). This means it is a viola in the same range as a cello, giving you the possibility to play those low notes as a violist. The low notes have a slightly different tone and frequency to them which makes them absolutely perfect for mixing with rock, metal, film music, electronic music and other non-classical genres because they don't clash with the guitars and bass guitars like cello's and double basses do.
For the first layer I've applied a pitch shifter to the recordings of the chin cello to get the range of the double bass (pitch shifting those recordings one octave down). Some will ask why I couldn't just pitch shift the recordings of my regular viola two octaves down. The simple answer is, the result isn't nearly as good (I've tried many, many times before I bought a whole other instrument just to get that extra octave).
In the violin-only section I've written out the chord structure and divided the notes of those chords between six violin parts (each note of the chord played in two octaves, six parts in total) and added quite a bit of reverb. This was just a suggestion but I think it works because these chords add body to the piece but are not leading parts.
I've recorded all the parts you see played here twice. I figured showing fourty different screens where each part is played twice would make both my life while editing and your life while trying to figure out what is going on much harder than it needs to be ;). Some parts are even played four times for depth. In total the part consists of about 40-50 recordings (all of which you do see played here once)!
