The Tarkine Drive

A great day out in the Tarkine wilderness in NW Tasmania. The Tarkine Drive is located just south of Edith Creek and takes around 2 hours to complete, driving through mostly dense rain forest. You can easily fill in a whole day or two exploring this area so give yourself time to enjoy the sights.

In this trip we visit Lake Chisholm, the Milkshake Hills and Wes Beckett Falls.

Lake Chisholm is one of many sink holes in the area created by an extensive flooded limestone karst system. The walk is quite short and takes you past some huge trees before arriving at the lake.

The Milkshake Hills Reserve contains two walks; a 15 minute forest walk and a slightly longer walk to the top of the hills. The track is well made and suitable for all ages.

While the Wes Beckett Falls track has officially been closed since the 2016 bushfires which devastated this area, there is nothing stopping you from going there - but a word of caution, this is a fairly difficult track with many trees down over the track obscuring the way plus a steep section which goes down a cliff edge. If you don't like heights then you might want to avoid this one. There are no safety rails and you will need to keep an eye out for ribbons. However, your efforts will be rewarded at the end with the spectacular Wes Beckett Falls. The road in is quite long and gets rough towards the end so I don't recommend taking a 2WD car.


This part of the world receives a lot of rain so expect to get wet.
