On to chapter 5. So far we have seen the introduction and declaration of who Jesus is, the giving of miracles as a proof of who Jesus is and the beginnings of Jesus’ teachings on why he came (3:16).
In this chapter I think it is very important to keep an eye on who is speaking and who is being spoken to. Take time to read the chapter more than once. With each reading of the chapter, the over all story becomes clearer each time. You will never waste time in reading Gods Word.
John Chapter 5
The healing of the Lame and the persecution of the Healer
Verse 1-9 The healing of a lame (crippled) man.
1) Look in verse 2 …. which is called in the Hebrew tongue ____________________________.
That word you wrote means “house of mercy”
2) Look in verse 3 …..In these lay a great multitude of _____________________ folk,….
That word you wrote just means “powerless” or “not having any ability in themselves”
3) Look in verse 9 …. and on the same day was the ______________________________
That word simply means the “7th day” of “Saturday” one of the Jewish holy days (no work allowed)
In review, we find a powerless man sitting in a house of mercy (Bethesda) looking for a healing of his injuries, on a day when work is not allowed, Jesus heals this man and tells the man to take his bed (bedroll) and leave since his miracle has come to pass.
Verse 10-16 The persecution of the healed (no longer lame) man.
4) Look in verse 16 …. And therefore did the Jews ___________________ Jesus, and sought to
_________________________ him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
Notice, none of these “religious” people cared at all about the miracle that healed the lame man. There only concern was that Jesus (the Son of God) had violated their religion and religious views.
Verse 17-30 The Healer of the lame man having to defend Himself against the religious.
5) Look in verse 18 …. making himself _____________________ with God.
6) Look in verse 20 …. and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may ___________________
(Always know the reason and purpose behind the miracles that Jesus does)
7) Look in verse 22 … hath committed all judgment unto the _________________
Religions, both in Jesus time and in our time, refuse to believe the things about Jesus that have already been taught in John chapter 1, 2 3, and 4.
Religions accept Jesus as a great teacher but Jesus is more than that.
Religions accept Jesus as a miracle worker but Jesus is more than that.
Religions accept Jesus as a great prophet but Jesus is more than that
Jesus is the very Son of God and as a result, equal with God (remember John 1:1-3, 14).
Verse 31-38 How many witnesses does it take to prove the facts?
8) Consider a court of law, where witnesses are everything (if they are true). Consider the witnesses.
Verse 33 ….Ye sent unto _______________________, and he bare witness unto the truth.
Verse 36 …But I have _____________ witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath
given me to finish, the same ____________________ that I do, bear witness of me,
Verse 37 …the ____________________himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me…..
If you are trying to make a good case for anything, witnesses are important. Jesus had so many people and actions that were witness to the fact of who Jesus is. The Son of God, the Messiah, Redeemer of all mankind and Immanuel, God dwelling with us.
Verse 39-47 The source that will end ALL religious debate.
9) Look in verse 39 …. Search the __________________________....
10) Look in verse 46 …had ye believed ___________, ye would have believed me: for ______ wrote of me.
Just like us, Jesus experienced people that believed different than He did. His answer over and over was to go to the Holy Bible and find the answers. Forget what religions and religious men teach you and find out what God Himself teaches you.
If you would like to dig deeper here are some verses to look up on your own.
These topics can be harder to understand. I would encourage you to put aside what “we have always thought” and look exclusively in the Bible for truth.
Many people have a hard time with the Deity of Jesus. (that Jesus is God)
Isa 7:14 …..Matt 1:23 ….. Isa 9:6 … Coll 1:16-18 … Titus 2:13
Ever thought about the Bible teachings of the fact that God that judges us will be Jesus
Matt 25:31-36 ….Rom 2:16 ....2 Cor 5:10 …2 Tim 4:1 …..Rev. 20:11-12
Consider some verses that explain what Jesus was saying in verse 46-47
Numbers 21:8-9 … Deut 18:15, 18-19… Acts 26:22 … Hebrews chapter 7 8 9 10
