Among all the peaks of the Canadian Rockies, Birdwood stands out for its sharp and iconic geometry. However, the objective of this route is not Birdwood itself, but the mountain located just next to it, which has become one of the most iconic viewpoints in the area: Smutwood Peak. From Smutwood, hikers enjoy an impressive 360-degree panorama, with the striking silhouette of Birdwood standing right in front.

The route does not involve major technical difficulties beyond physical effort. The first section is long and mostly flat, running through valley and forest; from the end of the valley onwards, the trail climbs steadily to the summit. In the alpine zone, small areas with snow may be encountered, so carrying appropriate equipment is highly recommended. Before reaching Smutwood, there is a secondary peak, easily accessible, which serves as an alternative viewpoint for those who do not wish to continue higher (min 6:08; it is the small peak located to the right when viewed from Smutwood’s summit).

Carrying bear spray is essential, and making noise while hiking is strongly recommended, especially in forested areas. The route starts and ends at a parking area near the road (an unpaved track, but suitable for all types of vehicles), with easy access.
