The tree in front of me is ‘Naga Lingam’ (Cannonball Tree).
Its flower looks like a snake's hood, so it is locally known as ‘Naga Lingam’.
In English, it is commonly known as Cannonball Tree for its fruit looks like a cannonball.
This tree appeared in India about three thousand years ago.
How it appeared in India is a mystery, because it is a Latin American tree.
Later it began to spread to many different countries of the world.
But in Bangladesh, there are only a few in number.
I've found two of them at Notre Dame College.
And it can be found in few other places including Ramna Park.
This tree is a unique one, as it has stalks like the roots of a tree.
This type of tree is not commonly seen.
And the leaves got smaller at the top and spread like a Devil’s Tree.
Therefore, this tree has always been regarded as a different kind of tree.
This tree is conserved religiously in Hinduism and Buddhism and is also worshiped in various ways.
Many ants are roaming here to extract honey from the flowers.
A big flower is seen over there which is a little downwards, perhaps it will fall with a touch.
That's why I'm trying to get a little closer just to see it.
Cannonball blooms from summer to autumn.
The flowers are orange, bright red, or pink in color.
The structure of the flower, the petals, pollen, and scent, everything together has made it even more magnificent.
The fruit of the Cannonball tree is a favorite food of Elephants.
So, it is also locally called as the ‘Elephant Fruit Tree’ in some areas.
Cannonball tree has medicinal or herbal attributes as well.
The extracts from its flowers, leaves and bark are widely used as medicine.
Anti-biotic, anti-fungal, and anti-septic drugs are made from its extract.
Some flowers are lying around here.
I’m going to pick one flower to show that it looks like a snake’s hood.
Its color is exquisite.
Neither red, nor pink; but a graceful color somewhere in between.
There’s also yellow in the middle.
This combination of yellow, and red or pink, gives this flower a different touch of beauty.
This tree will be about 100 feet tall.
The height of these trees is usually above 80 feet
This tree here is very old.
Here at Notre Dame College, this tree will probably be 70-80 years old.
All things considered; it is an exceptional kind of tree.
We should protect this tree because there are not many of them in Bangladesh.
If we don’t care about conserving these trees, soon they will go extinct.
However, it is possible to propagate these trees.
And we must take the initiatives to do it, for the sake of our nature and environment.
To keep it healthy, to keep the tradition of this tree alive, we must conserve this tree.
