G'day Viewers! In this first installment of our "Rural Life" series - we will be dealing with a typical scenario out bush. Fallen trees after storm damage or old age is a fact of life. How we clean this up (if at all!) is a matter of debate, however here I show you my best practice method of keeping it tidy and not pushing everything into a big burn pile for later as seems to be the norm! (wasteful)
Here we explore the methodolody of tree cleanup - and why.
Gum trees in Australia are plentiful, but is very dense / hard timber when it dries and seasons - hence its always a good idea to chip the branches when its green vs letting it harden up over time.
The chips of Gum trees (Eucalypts) and the leaves specifically are full of oils and can be toxic to soil. Hence its generally a good idea to mulch this further in to fine chips (greater surface area) and store in piles to decompose and become mulch.
This process can take 6-12 months to satisfactorilly break the material down. Adding worms, manure (I use horse manure as its freely avail from neighbours) and even other leaf matter (deciduous) helps to create an organic ecosystem that breaks down much quicker (hot pile = fast, cold pile = slow)
I show you the equipment I use to get the job done and my mulching piles. The residual timber of the tree is cutup for firewood for winter.
Hope you enjoy - Cheers Bernie
