DAY 1
We arrived at Tokyo International Airport and stayed overnight at the airport hotel before heading to Hokkaido. The hotel had our first Japanese toilet! (We made a separate snowboard video.) After Hokkaido, we had 6 full days in Tokyo, staying at Mimaru Hotel with cool bunks, traditional seating, and easy subway access. We explored Ueno, shopped, and enjoyed a hot pot restaurant with a great view.
DAY 2
Today was Tsukiji Fish Market—so much crazy food! Dad loved the uni. Crowded but great for quick snacks, including delicious sugar-covered strawberries. Then, TeamLab Borderless amazed us with interactive light projections. Later, we had 7-11 snacks and saw the Tokyo Giants baseball game, cheering in the lively outfield section. On the way home, we spotted go-kart racers.
DAY 3
Akihabara District satisfied Witt’s manga obsession. We saw anime everywhere and enjoyed fresh udon noodles. Dinner was at Michelin-starred Nôl. We had to be polite—it wasn’t kid-friendly. Chef Tatsuya Noda focuses on sustainability, using vegetable ends and domestic sturgeon creatively, served beautifully in a minimalist setting.
DAY 4
Day trip to Mount Fuji (separate video).
DAY 5
We met Maui friends in Shibuya, crossed the famous intersection, visited a Pokémon Museum, enjoyed cat café treats, and had Italian lunch. Later, we explored Harajuku, ate yummy crepes, and stayed late for dinner.
DAY 6
Met our friends again at Tokyo Skytree with incredible city views and a glass floor. Ate paella at a Spanish restaurant. Mom and I relaxed while the boys explored Ueno Park, saw cherry blossoms, food booths, and a monkey show. We rode pedal boats (and got in trouble for wobbling), then found an amazing hidden restaurant.
DAY 7
Early return to Tsukiji Fish Market for mochi balls, strawberry mochi, and chocolate. Mom preferred wagyu beef from a busy alley restaurant—we luckily got seats and met Oahu friends. Dad was thrilled again. After reconnecting with Maui friends from Hokkaido, we visited TeamLab Planets with interactive water exhibits, drawing fish that swam on walls. Dad got reprimanded for bouncing too high. Later, visited Tori Gates, shopped, and enjoyed table-cooked dinner after a long search.
DAY 8
Final day knife shopping in Kappabashi. Mom and Dad each bought knives and ate at an odd Italian place. We stumbled upon Asakusa, enjoyed crepes, mochi custard, and ended our trip at a cherry blossom-filled temple.
Goodbye Tokyo! Goodbye Japan! We’ll be back.
