The Cuicocha Crater Lake hike is a stunning high-altitude trek located in the Ecuadorian Andes, within the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve. The trail circles the rim of a volcanic crater filled with a deep blue lake, formed after a massive eruption over 3,000 years ago. In the middle of the lake lie two lush, uninhabited islands, remnants of later volcanic activity.
The full loop is approximately 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) and takes about 4 to 5 hours to complete, depending on your pace. It offers breathtaking views of the crater, surrounding mountains, and — on clear days — even snow-capped volcanoes like Cayambe and Imbabura. The trail ranges from 3,100 to 3,500 meters (10,170 to 11,480 feet) in elevation, making acclimatization important.
Along the way, hikers encounter diverse highland flora, including orchids, shrubs, and native Andean plants. Birdlife is abundant, and with some luck, you might spot a condor or hummingbird.
This hike is moderately challenging due to the altitude and some steep sections, but it is well-marked and highly rewarding — a perfect day trip for nature lovers and adventurous travelers seeking panoramic views and peace in the Andes.
Distance 12,3 km
