Repaired a cracked brace, replaced a steel rivet, sharpened the runners and headed for the top of the mountainside with an original 1963 Flexible Flyer that I bought when I was 16.
Location: Mts west of Tetonia, ID
Maximum speed estimated by time through a measured distance (46.3 mph at the steepest section). Vertical drop 350ft, distance 1.1miles. Conditions were close to perfect, ice and hardpack, temperature 18-22 degrees f.
The grunting was caused by the awkward weight of a Kodak P850 duct taped to a helmet. The sled had to be tail-skidded at the bottom to make the sharp left turn. It had decelerated to an estimated 33mph at that point.
What a Hoot! Did it two times more (before the sun softened the ice) w/o the cam rig which surely made the trip faster. Wahoo! Definitely faster than skis, more aerodynamic and less contact surface.
BUT... even better...check Rodeln on my channel. Rodels are faster, more maneuverable, more durable, safer and super for long distance as well as short slalom drops. They carve, they fly!
