In this video, we take a look at the Curtiss A-18 Shrike, an American twin-engine heavy fighter and attack aircraft from the interwar period. We first talk about the global fascination with heavy fighters, and how a number of them followed a generally similar design philosophy. We briefly talk about the Messerschmitt Bf 110, Potez 630, and Bristol Blenheim, before moving to Curtiss' line of attack aircraft in the Shrike.
We start with the A-8 Shrike, a single-engine attacker, before moving to the A-10 Shrike, the A-12 Shrike, and finally the Curtiss Model 76, which later received the name Curtiss XA-14. We talk about its overall solid performance and specs for the era, how Curtiss went about further improving it, and how the Military ended up not really wanting it. We talk about its short production run and its troubled but overall solid career. We end by talking about how the A-18 Shrike led to better aircraft in the Douglas A-20 Havoc and Douglas A-26 Invader.
