A heavy rainstorm on Semeru today (December 10) triggered a fast-moving lahar that surged down the ravines carved by the November 19 pyroclastic flow. As the runoff hit fresh deposits still retaining intense heat, the water flashed to steam, creating dramatic phreatic bursts along the stream bed.
Cam C captured the entire sequence in real time—showing how even weeks after a major eruption, pyroclastic material can remain dangerously hot beneath the surface.
Background:
On November 19, Mount Semeru produced a major pyroclastic flow that traveled several kilometers downslope, filling valleys with ash, boulders, and superheated debris. These deposits stay hot for long periods, and when sudden rainfall arrives, it can trigger powerful steam explosions and lahars without warning.
This clip highlights the ongoing instability on the southeast flanks of Semeru and the hazards that remain long after the main eruption.
