In the summer of 1944, a young German prisoner of war stepped into a small diner in the American South expecting anger, punishment, or at the very least cold silence. Instead, he found a warm plate of food, a seat at the counter… and a sign on the door that would make the moment impossible to forget.
For a man who had marched through hunger in Europe, the simple meal felt unreal. But what stunned him more was the American soldier standing outside — a Black GI in full uniform, forbidden from entering the same diner because of two painted words on the glass: “Whites Only.”
The enemy was allowed in. The soldier was not.
