One of the age old tales in fiction is seeing the hero go one on one with the villain and waiting to find out who will come out on top. In many ways you could call this the oldest story of all. And in modern times this trope has gotten a superpowered update to it as since the rise of superheroes and supervillains during the early 20th century, we’ve seen this battle play out again and again.

Sure, during those early days it was mostly taking place on the comic book page, or if not there then occasionally on the small screen. But in recent decades, the whole thing has jumped over to multiplexes too. And this has allowed a whole new generation a chance to watch the likes of Batman do battle with his arch enemy The Joker in The Dark Knight, Wolverine and Sabretooth duke it out for supremacy in X-Men, Captain America try to bring down the menace that is The Red Skull in the MCU, or even brothers go to war when Thor and Loki clash in the same universe.

Yes, there’s just something about a fight between a superhero and a supervillain which we can’t help but enjoy watching again and again. And given how popular the genre remains to this day with the massive success of franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we can expect to see a lot more examples of this in the future.
