This is Set Two from a night at the Village Vanguard in 1996. Set One can be heard here: • Paul Motian Trio - Bill Frisell, Joe Lova... . One of the all-time classic non-piano-based jazz trios, Motian, Frisell and Lovano played together from 1984 until Motian's death in 2011. I saw this band several times in the 1980s and it was a spiritual experience each time. Motian was a one-of-a-kind drummer, and an impressive composer as well. The surprise for me in this set was their taking on Mingus's "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love", from Mingus's Changes albums (in my opinion one of his best bands and some of his best writing).
