The Kangra Valley Toy Train, running between Pathankot in Punjab and Joginder Nagar in Himachal Pradesh, is one of India’s most scenic yet least-talked-about narrow-gauge railways. Opened in 1929, this 164 km line is an engineering marvel built during the British era to access the Shanan Power House—the first hydroelectric project in India. Unlike the Kalka–Shimla or Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the Kangra Valley Railway is designed with gentle curves instead of spiralling loops, giving travellers long, uninterrupted views of the Dhauladhar range.

The train trundles slowly at about 20–25 km/hr, making it one of the slowest but most immersive toy trains in India. It passes through 33 stations, 950 bridges, and only 2 tunnels—interestingly, the lowest number of tunnels among all Indian mountain railways, because engineers wanted to keep the mountains “visible” throughout the journey.

The stretch between Baijnath and Joginder Nagar is especially dramatic, with rivers, terraced fields, tea gardens of Palampur, and picture-perfect hamlets appearing like a moving postcard. Joginder Nagar, the final station, is the only railway station in India connected to a funicular railway (now defunct) that once carried heavy machinery up the steep mountains for the power project.

Another fascinating trivia is that the railway alignment was chosen to withstand the region’s seismic activity—this area witnessed the devastating 1905 Kangra earthquake. Many stations here still look frozen in time, with vintage signboards, stone buildings, and manually operated levers. The train passes close to major attractions like Kangra Fort, Masroor Rock-Cut Temples, Chamunda Devi Temple, and Andretta Artist Village.

Railway lovers particularly adore this route because the narrow-gauge locomotives here are among the last of their kind still in regular use in India. Over the decades, the toy train has survived floods, landslides, and proposals of conversion to broad gauge, thanks to locals who consider it an emotional lifeline as well as a heritage treasure. Even today, tickets are surprisingly cheap, making it one of the most budget-friendly mountain train experiences in India. For travellers seeking raw Himalayan beauty without the crowds, the Kangra Valley Toy Train remains a hidden gem waiting to be rediscovered.
