Use of digital financial services (DFS) is rapidly expanding across Nigeria—but so are the risks to consumers. Nearly one in four Nigerian users reported experiencing unexpected fees or charges in the past year or being targeted by fraudsters. Among those experiencing issues, only half sought formal redress.
On August 6, 2025, Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) hosted a webinar to discuss key insights from our Nigerian Consumer Protection in Digital Financial Services Survey with IPA’s Brian Mwesigwa and William Blackmon. The survey, a follow-up to the 2020 Nigeria Consumer Protection Survey, took a deep dive into how Nigerians are using DFS, the challenges they face, and how they seek redress. The webinar concluded with a panel discussion featuring Ms. Foyinsola Akinjayeju (Enhancing Financial Inclusion and Advancement), Dr. Aisha Isa-Olatinwo (Central Bank of Nigeria), Mr. Ajibade Laolu-Adewale (Committee of e-Business Industry Heads), and Mrs. Uche Uzoebo (Shared Agent Network Expansion Facilities Limited).
