What did Saint John Bosco do that even the Pope called him the “Father and Teacher of Youth”? Born into loss and raised amid hardship and violence, John Bosco never allowed suffering to turn into bitterness. Instead, he learned endurance and found in prayer a refuge for his wounded heart. When he became a priest, he did not seek a quiet parish or a secure life. He went out into the streets of Italy, choosing to live among abandoned children, homeless boys, and young people no one else wanted to accompany. When the first Salesian house was founded, there were moments when the table was empty, food was gone, and the future seemed uncertain. Yet in steadfast trust, Don Bosco knelt in prayer, and signs of divine providence began to appear—baskets of bread that never ran out, pots of chestnuts that never emptied, as if God Himself were confirming the path he had chosen. The legacy of Saint John Bosco is not a legend, but a living work of education: the global Salesian family, where millions of young people have been welcomed, formed, and given hope. Today, Saint John Bosco is being considered by the Church for proclamation as a Doctor of the Church.
