Nurbanu Sultan was one of the most prominent figures in the Ottoman Empire. She was the Principal Consort (Haseki Sultan) and eventually the legal wife of Sultan Selim II (reign 1566–1574) (the son of Sultan Suleyman and Hurrem Sultan).

Her power increased when she became the Queen Mother (Valide Sultan) of Sultan Murad III (reign 1574–1583).
