Using mixed methods to evaluate interventions - Souraya Sidani (Mixed Methods Webinar - June 14, 2016)

Intervention research is concerned with determining the effectiveness of therapies or treatments in addressing a health-related problem experienced by individual patients, groups, or communities. To be effective, an intervention should be acceptable to the target population, feasible within the context of practice, implemented with fidelity by the interventionists and patients, able to trigger the mechanism responsible for producing beneficial changes in the outcomes, and associated with minimal risk or adverse effects. A comprehensive assessment of these aspects of intervention effectiveness demands a mix of data collection methods. This presentation describes strategies for integrating quantitative and qualitative methods to examine interventions’ acceptability, feasibility, fidelity, outcomes and risk in intervention evaluation trials.

Dr. Souraya Sidani is Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in the Design and Evaluation of Patient-Centered Intervention, at the School of Nursing, Ryerson University. Her areas of expertise are in quantitative research methods, intervention design and evaluation, treatment preferences, and measurement. Her research areas of interest focus on evaluating interventions and advanced practice roles, on examining patient preferences for treatments, and on refining research methods and measures for determining the clinical effectiveness of interventions.
