Hiking Solo: Yeonhwado, Tongyeong, South Korea

Yeonhwado (연화도), a serene island situated just off the coast of Tongyeong (통영) in South Korea, offers a tranquil escape that's easily accessible by a one-hour ferry ride from the Tongyeong Ferry Terminal. Nestled right beside the charming island of Udo (우도), Yeonhwado boasts similarly stunning trails, albeit on a more expansive scale.

This secluded haven is a preferred destination among ferry travelers for its peaceful and remote ambiance, making it an ideal spot for leisurely three-hour hikes. At the time of my visit, the round-trip ferry ticket from the Tongyeong ferry terminal to Yeonhwado cost approximately ₩18,400.

One of the island's standout attractions is Yongmeori (용머리), a breathtaking formation of rocks that uncannily resembles a dragon's head emerging from the glistening waters. Yeonhwado also boasts a captivating suspension bridge. While a few minbak (민박), which are private homes with rooms for rent are available, Yeonhwado is primarily a destination for day-trippers.

Upon disembarking from the ferry, strolling along the bay to the right will lead you to a remarkable giant fish painting adorning the side of a building. This is where I commenced my hike. Along the way, you'll encounter various points of interest, including a towering statue that, I presume, depicts a revered monk. The summit of Yeonhwabong offers a splendid vantage point to behold panoramic views, allowing you to admire the beauty of Yongmeori (용머리).

The name "Yeonhwado" (연화도) carries the enchanting meaning of the "island of the lotus flower." Legend has it that the island earned its name due to a remarkable story involving a renowned Buddhist monk. Upon his passing, villagers laid him to rest at sea, and as if in tribute, a resplendent lotus flower emerged from the depths.
