Trains Around Big Ten Curve

In this video, we explore the Big 10 curve, near Arvada, Colorado, an engineering marvel, as part of an even bigger vision to connect Denver and Salt Lake City. The Big 10 curve was built in 1902 by the Denver Northwestern & Pacific Railroad, as part of their 'Moffat Route' named after David H. Moffat, the founder and owner of the company. David Moffat and his team had a vision to build a mainline directly west out of Denver, across the Rocky Mountains to Salt Lake City. They also had a vision to keep grades as minamal as possible (Ideally less than 2%) which is how the Big 10 was born. The tracks heading west loop back east for a bit, and then loop again back west on a 10 degree curve radius. After that, the tracks turn north to climb along the Foothills before continuing west into the Rockies at Eldorado Canyon.

While freight traffic is nothing like it used to be, you can still see daily freight trains tackle the curve from both the Union Pacific and BNSF Railroads. Amtrak and Rocky Mountaineer also run their own trains over this route, (though we don't see the Rocky Mountaineer in this video) and with the recent agreement over the Moffat Tunnel, we very likely will see even more passenger trains traversing this beautiful mainline.
