In today’s video, I’m removing the factory black vinyl wrap from the doors and replacing it with some shiny forged carbon look vinyl wrap. This is a strange one for me because I thoroughly believe that all carbon fibre wrap needs to be killed with fire, but I figured its better than the faded flat black factory wrap, so let’s give it a go. Its also a learning opportunity for me too, I’ve never really been left alone with the vinyl wrapping tools unsupervised before, so let’s see how it goes!
Firstly, I’m going to remove the factory wrap. I do this with the plastic side of the vinyl wrapping squeegee tool and a heat gun. I remove the rear edges first because they’re then ones that’ll cause me dramas later on when I remove the bulk of the vinyl later on. I then move round to the front and with the heat gun, I warm up the vinyl and gently pull it off the door. Once that’s done, I use my Wipeout glue & tar remover from Viper Car Care to remove the glue residue. Cleaned it right up, I tell you! Once all that is clean, I measure up for the new wrap and start to apply it. It’s a bit fiddly, but I start from the top and work down. Stick the vinyl all the way down the flat side of the door and then roughly trim it to shape – you shouldn’t use a knife on the bodywork, I know, but I had no knife tape, so tough! I tucked the vinyl into the window rubber trim strips and cut it to its final size. Once I’d done that, I trimmed the bottom to size and opened the door. I used the heat gun on the edge that would wrap around the door’s trailing edge and pulled it tight round and stuck it down. This bit was most important at the top where there is a compound curve. Once that was stuck down, I trimmed it to its final shape and the job is done. Not the neatest job, I admit. Theres some wobbly trim lines, a small bit missing at the bottom and some bubbles in it, but its air release vinyl, so I’m not too worried by that. All in all, a significant upgrade over the factory black vinyl and the forged carbon picks up the light quite nicely.
