Hegseth says story about him saying 'kill everybody' after boat strike is fake

Department of War Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday denied a report from the Washington Post that reported he said to “kill everybody” after two survivors of an alleged Venezuelan drug boat were witnessed holding on to a destroyed vessel that had been targeted by the U.S.
“This is what you and the press don’t understand,” Hegseth said during President Donald Trump’s cabinet meeting.
“You sit in your air conditioned offices. You’re up on Capitol Hill and you nitpick. You plant fake stories in the Washington Post about ‘kill everybody.’ Based on anonymous sources, not based in anything, not based in truth at all.”

Following the report from the Washington Post, politicians on both sides have suggested a review of the strike and said if Hegseth directed everyone on the boat to be killed, it could be a war crime.
The Senate and House Armed Services Committees announced that they were launching inquiries about the strikes.
“We've got to get to the bottom of this,” Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner said after the report came out. “We also need to find out why the administration has not released the unedited version of the video.”
