Te Rongo Rito - Maniapoto Arts Festival

As part of the Maniapoto Arts Festival -with the theme of 'Kia Tau Te Mauri' - Stand in your settled place.

The context behind the theme - 'Kia tau te mauri' - suggests the idea that when a person is settled, of comfortable in their own place - it is easier to show kindness to others when you have it within yourself. If you are not settled, and may harbour unkind feelings within - it can be difficult to show those attributes on the outside. What ever conflicts/challenges you go through - you can find your 'settled place'.

Promoting more kindness and peace in the community.
And this was illustrated through the ancestor of this area - Te Rongo Rito.

'Te Rongo-rito. ( The first women in school of learning).
She was the last child of Rereahu and Hine-au-pounamu’s family.
She was set apart form her brothers as a “Puhi”, - a special one and her father Rereahu made a gift of land for her – called Te Marae-o-Hine. She married Tama-te-huru and they had two children, Pare-whakaroro-uri and Hui-tao.

Te Rongo-rito petitioned her father to allow her to enter the house of learning, to it’s inner and essential workings. In this way she was a bringer f a new dawn for women. And this practice continued up to the last generation of students of the house of learning of Miringa-te-Kakara.

Although the last of the children, she was a woman of great mana. She was an expert who used prayers to heal, to tend aliments and to stem blood flow. When tempers flared in anger it was her that subdued them.”

Marcus Winter, also known as The Sandman, is a Māori artist ( Ngāpuhi/Te Roroa) from Aotearoa ( NZ) who is known for his intricate sand art creations. Using only sand and light, he creates stunning visual displays that have captivated audiences all over the world.

His mission is to bring people together through the universal language of art, revive indigenous stories and inspire others to find their own creative voice. Whether he is creating a large-scale installation for a festival or a intimate performance for a small group, The Sandman's goal is always the same: to leave his audience moved and uplifted.
