Chath Puja is a four-day Vedic Hindu festival celebrated in Nepal, primarily in the southern Terai region, to worship the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya. It is also celebrated in Kathmandu, where people gather at the banks of rivers like the Bagmati.
The festival, a celebration of gratitude, prosperity, and family, takes place six days after Tihar (Diwali).
Rituals and observances
Chhath is characterized by rigorous rituals, including fasting, sacred bathing, and making offerings to the rising and setting sun. Many devotees observing the fast are women, though men also participate. The worship does not involve priests, making it a unique and personal act of devotion.
The four days of Chhath Puja include:
Day 1: Nahay Khay: The festival begins with a ritual bath in a holy river or other body of water. Devotees then prepare and consume a single meal before beginning their fast.
Day 2: Kharna: Devotees observe a day-long fast without water. In the evening, they break their fast after offering a specially prepared meal (often a sweet dish called kheer) to Chhathi Maiya.
Day 3: Sandhya Arghya: This is the main day of the festival. Devotees gather at the banks of rivers, ponds, or other water sources to offer prayers and arghya (offerings) to the setting sun. Worshippers wade into the water, holding baskets of offerings such as fruits and sweets. Oil lamps (diyas) are often set afloat on the water.
Day 4: Usha Arghya: On the final day, devotees return to the water before sunrise to offer arghya to the rising sun, marking the end of the festival. After the morning prayers, the fast is broken, and the prasad (offerings) are distributed among family and friends.
