John Williams composed this piece for the Special Olympics in celebration of their 1987 International Summer Games. Originally set to lyrics by Alan & Marilyn Bergman, the orchestral version premiered on May 5, 1987, at Symphony Hall in Boston, with the composer conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra.
Described as a “jazzy, hopefully upbeat march” by the composer, the piece is written in the same vein of the "March from 1941", the famous main theme for the Steven Spielberg's film from 1979. Of particular interest is the extended percussion/drum solo in the middle of the piece.
This rare recording is taken from a television or radio broadcast of that era, hence the low audio quality.
