A hoot owl, sitting still and wise,
Was just about to close his eyes
When he heard the rooster:
“Cock-a-doodle-doo!”
His feathers shining
Red, green, blue.
An awesome sight at break of dawn—
The hoot owl pondered with a yawn:
“I’m just a hoot owl in a pine…
That rooster’s life looks more fun than mine!
Strutting proudly in the sun—
Crowing looks like so much fun!
I want to cock-a-doodle-doo…
I want to be a rooster too!”
That rooster—green and blue and red—
Heard the words the hoot owl said.
He flapped and shouted, “NO SIREE!
An owl’s life looks more fun to me!
Soaring, hooting, wild and free,
Perching high up in a tree…
Moon and stars and crickets too…

The owl hopped where the rooster stood,
Determined he could crow real good.
He blinked and squinted in the light—
“Wow… that sun is really bright!”
He puffed his chest, one eye askew,

Oh, what a silly, funny sound!
The rooster tumbled to the ground,
Laughing, kicking—red, green, blue—
The little hoot owl laughed there too!
“I like this sunny morning scene,
Your shiny red and blue and green.
I like the cows, the goats, the sheep…
But I’m an owl—
I need to sleep!”
He chuckled, swooped back to his tree—
“This rooster thing is not for me!”

That rooster stayed awake that night—
No blazing sun, just stars for light.
The air grew cold; he froze his tail,
He heard the forest moan and wail.
He cackled with a frightened scowl:
“I never want to be an owl!”
