Our journey starts at Tai Po Market Station on the MTR East Rail line. We see refurbished Metro-Cammell 12-car trains, which go up and down this line at up to 2-minute intervals. The line is busy - even the off-peak trains are just as full as the one we travel on to Sha Tin.
The Kowloon Canton Railway (British Section) was opened in 1910, and was electrified in 1983. In 2007 management passed to the MTR, and passenger gates between the KCR and the MTR lines were promptly removed. There is a history of the early years of the line on Wikipedia (see under "Kowloon--Canton Railway Corporation"), and the Tai Po Market Railway Museum is well worth a visit. However, the Museum Management don't like you taking videos, so I can't upload the footage I have.
At Sha Tin, we board an 81 bus to Kowloon. The vehicle is ATEE5, one of a small batch of five 12m ADL Enviro 500s with Euro 5 engines, delivered in December 2011. All Enviros delivered after this one have had the new shape bodywork.
In two other videos of this road on Youtube you can see monkeys walking across the footbridge at Kowloon Reservoir. I looked hard, but didn't see one!
Filmed on 26th April 2014.
