Most modern roofs today have a Class A fire rating on them and that's a UL test that tests the resistance of a roof system against burning embers or brands as they're called in the industry.
UL takes and they build a roof out of particular roof material and these, an arrangement like this. This is wood strips 12 inches by 12 inches, 3 deep, they get this thing completely on fire and they set it on the roof system then they fan that at 12 miles an hour.
This thing's gotta completely burn away a maximum one and a half hours before it burns through to the underside of the deck.
Now a Class C test is this little dude right here. Same kind of deal.
They use 25 of them but again they catch this on fire and they fan this at 12 miles an hour, these have to completely extinguish before it burns through but Class A is pretty safe unless you have a lot of debris on your roof so you always want to make sure you get that debris off and get that debris out of the gutters.
