I Tried The Indian Food That Tourists Don't Eat 🇮🇳

In this video, I explore Kolkata, India, to take a closer look at a side of Indian cuisine that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves: sweets. While dishes like butter chicken, samosas, biryani, and dosas are well-known around the world, many aren’t aware that India is home to some fantastic desserts. Kolkata, often considered the sweet capital of India, is the perfect place to try a variety of traditional treats.

I started at Putiram Sweets, a 150-year-old shop that’s popular with locals for breakfast. Here, I tried mishti doi, a creamy yogurt-based dessert that’s a staple in the region. After that, I walked for about 10 minutes to Haji Allauddin Sweets, where a large display of Indian sweets caught my eye. I went with the gulab jamun, which was soft and sweet, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Next, I visited Girish Ch. Dey & Nakur Ch. Nandy, a well-known spot for sandesh, a sweet made from paneer. I picked up two pieces to enjoy outside the shop. The texture was grainy, and they were quite moist. From there, I made my way to Chittaranjan Sweets, known for its rasgulla—syrup-filled balls made from paneer. The syrup ran out as soon as I took my first bite.

I wrapped up the video at Misti Ghar, where I tried a pantua and another piece of sandesh to finish off my tour of Kolkata’s sweets.
