What is Self-Regulation?
Self-regulation is the ability to recognize, express, and manage our feelings. As defined by occupational therapist Kim Bartel, it involves:
Identifying Feelings: Understand what you’re feeling.
Expressing Feelings: Communicate your emotions effectively.
Managing Feelings: Take proactive steps to cope with emotions.
Why is Self-Regulation Important?
Self-regulation varies by situation—whether before bedtime, a presentation, or a basketball game. It’s crucial for children to learn how to:
Identify their feelings
Manage emotions without masking or avoiding them
Engage in higher-level thinking and problem-solving
Note: Self-regulation is not just self-control; focusing solely on self-control can lead to emotional shutdown and hinder a child's ability to connect with others and think clearly.
