hi this video I show how I prep a nickel coated cylinder to take a new set of piston rings.
The nickel coating on these cylinders is around 0.08mm to 0.18mm thick, which I have researched from multiple sources. This can withstand a light hone to remove the glaze allowing the ring to reseat. When honing the cylinder all you need to do is remove the polished surface.
The coating on aluminium cylinder is a built up coating which is then honed to size with diamond faced cutting equipment. The nickel coating is an extremely hard durable material much harder then steel.
The other type of nickel coated cylinders are nickel coated steal cylinder sleave, on which the coating on cylinder sleave can be a lot thinner. This is because the sleave itself is a lot stronger and the coating is more for a performance use.
Please note it is not recommended to hone these sleave, but it is better to replace these.
A way to tell the 2 types of cylinders, whether its an aluminium cylinder or a steel sleave, is by sight. The steel cylinder will be easily visible inside the aluminium block, where as the aluminium cylinder will not be easily visible, for it is part of the aluminium block.
