This video covers our two trips with Kenai Fjord Tours, to two different glaciers. This was mainly to try to see Kittlitz's Murrelet, a tiny bird that is totally bound to glaciers when breeding. So, this was our only way to get to see them, but they were never a sure thing. We also hoped to get some new sea-mammals.
On June 16 we took the longest tour, to Northwestern Glacier. That was a 9 hour trip. We saw feeding Humpback Whales in Resurrection Bay, barely out of the Seward Harbour, and Puffins of both species, Rhinoceros Auklets and Marbled Murrelets, but no Kittlitz's.
On June 24 we took the medium tour, a mere 6 hours, to the Aialik Glacier. On the way there the captain took a detour out on Gulf of Alaska, due to a hunting pod of Orcas. That was a lifer for us, so no complaints!
Well at Aialik Glacier the boat stopped for quite some time (that was the same procedure as the earlier trip to NW Glacier) to watch the glacier calf. During that time we frantically tried to scan the large ice floe area, trying to spot those tiny, brownish Murrelets... As luck would have it, we did spot two, but they were far away. No good Kittlitz's Murrelet-photos was taken that day...
