Two Russian ballistic missiles hit the city of Sumy at just after 10am local time, killing 34 people, including two children and more than 117 were injured as locals gathered in the centre to mark Palm Sunday.
Sumy is in the north east of Ukraine, 18 miles from the Russian border. The area has seen intense fighting in recent weeks as Russia recaptured territory lost last year in a Ukrainian offensive.
President Zelenskyy took to social media urging the world not to stay silent or indifferent to the attack.
