Yamnotri glacier is the source of the Yamuna river. Situated 10km downhill from the glacier is the temple of Yamnotri, one of the four destinations for Uttarakhand's Char Dham trip.
Getting to Yamnotri involves reaching the village of Jankichatti via Barkot town in Uttarkashi district. Once at Jankichatti, a 5-km long walking trail takes us directly to the temple. A more technical trek involving a little bit of ice-climbing takes us to Saptarishi Kund which has the actual glacier.
We went to Yamnotri a week before it was open to pilgrims. This means that the temple was closed, but it was still possible to bathe in the hot water spring and sit down on the banks of the glacial cold Yamuna for a lunch picnic.
