ChillHop Sunset Beats: Jamming with YAMAHA SU10 Sampler

Using nothing but the YAMAHA SU10 sampler from 1995, I crafted some ChillHop beats. With a max sampling time of 39 seconds (in Long mode) and 11 mono samples, I recorded by hitting the pads manually, without any sequencer. The SU10’s specs are laughably low by today’s standards—only 4-note polyphony—so making tracks was a serious challenge. After a lot of trial and error, I finally nailed a take I was happy with.

There’s no time-stretching feature, so the rhythm samples are a bit off-timing, giving the groove a raw feel. But that unpolished vibe is part of the genre’s charm, so it worked out perfectly in the end.

The visuals in the video were created and retouched using Leonardo AI, and then balanced in Final Cut Pro X with the performance footage colors in mind. I used an anthropomorphized beaver as the motif, though it’s shown from behind, so it’s a bit unclear. Still, it captures the LoFi hip-hop aesthetic, and I’m really pleased with it.
