As we conin tinue our look back 20 years to a road trip through the American South-West we arrive at the Canyon de Chelly. This National Monument on Navajo tribal lands is a spectacular gash sliced though an underlying bedrock of glorious red sandstone. Most of the floor of the canyon is only accessible with Navajo guides but two roads following the canyon rim give visitors a series of magnificent overlooks. The best is saved until last when a short trail leads to incredible views of stunning Spider Rock. We continue then to Taos, crossing the Rio Grande en route. Here we visit the Taos Pueblo home to the Tiwa people. This adobe built village has been continually inhabited for over a thousand years. A circular route through the mountains brings us back for a late afternoon in Taos itself. The town is full of galleries and artists studios filled with tales of the West. A short ride south we arrive in Santa Fe the first European settlement west of the Mississippi. A little further south Albuquerque was another interesting pause while we visited the beautiful Botanic Garden. Here autumn was showing its magical colours. Soon we would aim south deeper into the deserts of southern New Mexico.
